Why a Wall is a Crazy Idea; Improving Immigration is not a Quick Fix

To spend a lot of money on a wall to fix the immigration problem is a crazy idea.

A wall will only make the problem worse.

You can dig under a wall.

You can fly over a wall.

You can blow up a wall.

You climb over a wall.

You can make a hole in the wall.

Walls are not impenetrable.

Instead we need to think deeply about this immigration issue, and make good decisions about it.

First, we have to consider reasons for illegal immigration. People come for opportunity, opportunity to make money, opportunity to live a better life, and opportunity to increase their status back home.

Then we have to consider the multiple scenarios of this illegal immigration--how does it happen, and where is it a big problem.

After that we have to work at the issue step-by-step with our long term interests and humanity as a guide.

Stop illegal drugs and drug sales; end human trafficking.
For example, illegal immigration that supports illegal drugs, guns, or human trafficking, needs to be stopped first. We have to stop those in the United States that welcome and support this while also stopping those from other countries that perpetuate it. I know there are efforts in place related to this, and it seems that we should put a lot of attention into this. If no one in the United States bought illegal drugs, guns, or trafficked people, this wouldn't be an issue.

Don't allow American individuals or organizations to hire and mistreat illegal immigrants for their own gain.
Next, we have to look at United States individuals and organizations that perpetuate this crime by hiring illegals. Instead we have to work to see why they do this, and make a legal way for United States citizens and companies to hire people for the jobs they want done, and we have to make sure that those who hire are paying fair wages and offering fair working conditions. Americans who hire illegals without due process and then pay and treat those illegals poorly are to blame for the immigration crisis and to put an end to that will help eliminate the problem.

Clearly analyze the problem, and try to prevent it.
And, we have to look at where people are coming from and why they are coming. It could be that we could work with some of those countries to better living at home for those people so they don't feel like they have to leave their homelands. I know there's been a lot of corruption with efforts like these in the past, but perhaps we could do a better job now if we put the best and brightest minds to work on the issue and work with humanity and respect to solve the problem.

Acknowledge the promise of immigration.
Also, we have to look at the need. I read recently that countries like the United States in the not too distant future will be vying against other countries for more immigrants in the future. We have to think about where immigrants truly support our country, economy, and good living. Many stats about immigrants are very positive--we must look carefully at this and figure out how we can foster good laws and policies to welcome immigrants.

Foster positive global partnerships; don't incite hatred amongst the world's people.
Further we have to consider humanity--we don't want to make enemies, but instead we want to get along with the people of the world. We can't turn a blind eye to refugees and we can't mistreat them--we have to find ways work with the countries around the world to support life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all people including people who have been forced out of their homelands because they cannot safely live there.

Pay attention to global warming.
Looking deeply at global warming and the need for so many to move due to environmental destruction and events is another area we have to look closely at. How will the world react to this global warming, and how will we work with other countries to make good homes and communities for people who are climate refugees. Just think people in our own country whose lands have been torched by fires will be climate migrants, perhaps what we learn from them will help us to work with climate refugees from other countries.

Make it clear; criminals are not wanted here.
We can't let people immigrate to the United States who are going to commit grave crimes--we have to make that message clear that if you don't follow the law, you can't stay.

Streamline, clarify, better all immigration laws and policies.
We have to clean up, streamline, and clarify all immigration laws. Right now it seems like the system is a mess, and we need to take a multi-prong approach to fixing this problem. A wall will not work, a wall is like putting a bandaid on cancer. Instead of a bandaid approach, we need a deep multi-faceted, positive, and humane approach. We can do better here, but it won't be simple.
